Film Icon Sam Neill Provides a Heartbreaking Update on His Cancer Treatment
The 76-year-old actor, Sam Neill, revealed earlier this year that he was battling rare blood cancer, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. The chemotherapy treatment failed to work on him, so his doctors switched him to an anti-cancer drug which put him in remission for more than twelve months.
Unfortunately, Neill shared that the drug will eventually stop working. “I’m prepared for that,” he said. Neill also told Australian Story that while dying would be “annoying” he isn’t “remotely afraid”.
Though fighting cancer is incredibly tough for Neill, it hasn’t stopped him from pursuing his work in film — currently, he’s filming an adaptation of Liana Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall on the Gold Coast and appearing in the second season of mini-series The Twelve, filmed in Western Australia.
Neill has been finding strength with the help of close friends, namely Bryan Brown, the Australian actor. Reflecting on his long and impressive career, Neill told the ABC that he is privileged to have spent so much time with other outstanding actors. “I can‘t tell you how privileged I am to spend that amount of time with so many actors, so many of whom I’ve really enjoyed and so many of whom I’ve really admired,” he said.
Neill is currently working on a new book, “Did I Ever Tell You This?”, in which he’ll be sharing personal stories and anecdotes from his career. His hope is to present a piece of himself for his children and grandchildren to keep.
Despite having been the frontrunner to take on the role of James Bond in the 1980s, ultimately the role went to Timothy Dalton. Neill has also been linked to Australian political journalist Laura Tingle in recent years. He has two children from his previous relationships. With all of the personal and professional milestones he’s achieved over a fifty-year career, Neill is a beloved figure in Australia, New Zealand, and Hollywood.
